16x20” gouache painting on arches paper. Included with a gold frame.
One of the paintings from the Twelve Nights On Heaven's Headrest, created for the 2023 Bassetti Architects Artist Residency and exhibited at the Kristen Ramirez gallery in Museum of Museums in 2023.
Ma Mian (horse face) is one of the two gatekeepers of Diyu, the underworld. Ma Mian and Niu Tou (ox head), are guardians that are the first beings that a dead human soul encounters when entering Diyu, and are guided by them to the courts of hell to be judged on the actions of their lifetime, and whether the soul should be punished or rewarded. Ma Mian has the body of a human but the head of a horse. They are often illustrated carrying chains to take the souls, and he often depicted some type of sword.
This painting is intended to be paired with Niu Tou (Ox Head). If you are interested in purchasing both these paintings to keep them together, they can be purchased at $1000 for both. Please send an email to coordinate this discount.
